Grandpa Blazzard

Some of my favorite Grandpa Blazzard memories

  1. He always had grape soda stored under the bed in the guest bedroom and lots of ice cream in the freezer. A guest in their home was never able to leave without having one of these or other treats that Grandpa could find to offer them.
  2. Eating breakfast with him and Grandma on every late start Tuesday before highschool.
  3. Being in Grandpa’s house and hearing him whistle while he worked
  4. I have never seen any other man consistently do dishes, mop floors, and go to work and help without being asked as much as Grandpa did.
  5. Watching Grandpa play cards with Grandma was hilarious. Whoever was playing with them always had to settle card/score/general game disputes
  6. He was on the ball as far as anything that needed sharpened; kitchen knives, shovels etc.
  7. Grandpa could often be found on the back porch shining his shoes.
  8. I loved to walk up or drive by his house and see him in his white cowboy hat watering the yard and gardening.
  9. He would ask me “Kamarah has anyone told you they loved you yet today,” and then no matter my answer he would tell me that he loved me.
  10.  I loved to hear Grandpa Blazzard say prayers. Any prayer, regular meal prayers, or large family gatherings he always had such a special way of speaking with Heavenly Father. It was very clear they had a close relationship.
  11. I loved how he used to refuse to come out of his bedroom until he had showered and shaved. He used to not let me hug him unless he had shaved because he didn’t want to scratch me.
  12. He never left the house in anything but a collared shirt. No t-shirts, no jeans. EVER.
  13. I love to hear stories from Grandpa a few of my favorites were; the new neighbor he thought was a peeping tom, how he kissed Grandma when she was dirty and covered in hay from working with her dad before they were married, when he bought his parents a car, anything from WWII but especially when he picked up the German helmet with half a scull still in it & the arm hanging from a tree in France, when he was Prom King, his early years of marriage with Grandma, when he would hold babies at church and by the end his suit was soaked in baby pee, when he followed the pretty girl to semaphore class in highschool and it ended up saving his life in the war, highwayman stories.
  14. I loved dusting the dresser in their bedroom and always took a minute to look at his breathtakingly handsome picture of him after high school and before the war.
  15. When I used to clean for them in high school Grandpa would hurry and do most of it the day before I would come because he was embarrassed if it was too dusty or spotty. He would practically faint if you were to walk into his bedroom and his bed wasn’t made. I was yelled at more than once to not walk into his bedroom if Grandma was sending me down there to get something if his bed wasn’t made.
